Qunoot in the Fajr Prayer – Sheikh Muqbil ibn Haadi ibn Waadi’ee

Question: What is the ruling on Qunoot in the Fajr prayer?

Answer: It is considered a Bid’ah (innovation) except in conditions of disaster. Then [in these conditions] the Qunoot is in all the prayers like how the Prophet (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to do as in the hadeeth of Ibn Umar and Abu Huraira and other than them.

As for specifying Fajr then Abu Malik Sa’ad Bin Tariq Bin Ashyam Al-Ashja’ee said to his father:

يا أبت صليت خلف رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم – وأبي بكر وعمر فهل كانوا يقنتون ؟ قال : أي بني محدث

O my father, you prayed behind the Prophet (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr and Umar. So did they used to make Qunoot? He said: O my son, it is an innovation.

As for the hadeeth of Anas in the Sunan that the Prophet (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) didn’t stop making Qunoot until he departed this world, then this hadeeth is Da’if because it was reported by way of Abu Ja’far Ar-Raazi. There is a difference of opinion on his trustworthiness and the more preferred opinion is that he is weak.

I advise the brother who is asking that he reviews (Zad ul-Ma’aad) for indeed there is no comparison to it. Even authors like ash-Shawkani in (Nayl ul-Awtaar) and as-San’anee in (Subul us-Salam) refer to this valuable book which is Zad ul-Ma’aad.

  1. Most probably Abu Bakr & Umar also practised Qunoot in Fajr prayer regularly – so when asked; Tariq Bin Ashyam Al-Ashja’ee would have commented that Abu Bakr & Umar practised innovation.

    1. Akhi, the meaning of the Hadith is that Tariq Ashyam al-Ashja’ee radiallahu ahnu prayed behind the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam and Abu Bakr and Umar and in the narration of Tirmidhi it mentions: behind Uthman and Ali ibn Abi Talib and they did not do the qunut in the fajr prayer.

Imam Abdurahman al-Mubaraakfoori rahimahuallah said in the explanation of the hadith:

وفي رواية النسائي : صليت خلف رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فلم يقنت ، وصليت خلف أبي بكر فلم يقنت ، وصليت خلف عمر فلم يقنت ، وصليت خلف عثمان فلم يقنت ، وصليت خلف علي فلم يقنت ، ثم قال يا بني إنها بدعة . والحديث يدل على عدم مشروعية القنوت

“In the narration of Nasaai: I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah sallahu alayhi and he did not make qunut and I prayed behind Abu Bakr and he did not make qunut and I prayed behind Umar and he did not make qunut and I prayed behind Uthman and he did not make qunut and I prayed behind Ali and he did not make qunut. Then he said: oh my son, it is an innovation.

The hadith is evidence for the impermissibility of qunut…”

So Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali radiallahu anhum did not do qunut in fajr because it is an innovation not practiced by the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam. That was the point Tariq Ashyam al-Ashja’ee: that it was an innovation that happened after Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam and his Caliphs.
