The Ruling on A Woman Gathering Her Hair on Her Head in the Form of a Ball? Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen

Question: What some women do in terms of gathering the hair of their head in the form of a ball at the back of their head. Does this enter into the threat:

ونساء كاسيات عاريات رؤوسهن كأسنمة البخت

‘Women who will be dressed but appear to be naked, inviting to evil; and they themselves will be inclined to it. Their heads will appear like the humps of the Bactrian camel…”

[Saheeh Muslim no. 1633]

Answer: “As for a woman gathering the hair of her head due to work then after that she lets it go, then there is no harm in it because this is not done for beautification or adornment. However, it is due to a need. As for raising it and gathering it in a form of beautification, then if it is above the head then it enters into the prohibition due to the statement of the Prophet (ﷺ) :

رؤوسهن كأسنمة البخت

Their heads will appear like the humps of the Bactrian camel

And the hump is above. If it is gathered at the neck, then it does not enter [into the Hadith] however it is warned against if a woman wants to go out to the market. For verily, if she goes out to the market and she gathers her hair at her neck, it will emerge from behind her abayah. So it will attract glances. So she is prohibited from that if she wants to go out to the market”
