The Ruling on a Woman using Hair Bands and Hair Clips- Shaikh Salih al-Fawzaan

Question: What is the ruling on placing bands and clips in the hair which increases the size of the head, enlarges it, and increases the length of the hair? What is the ruling on placing clips or bands which have pictures of animals or musical instruments?

Answer: “Enlarging the size of the head by gathering the hair by using hair bands or clips is not allowed, whether the hair is gathered upon the head or the side of th head such as it becomes as if there are two heads. There has come a severe threat in regards to the women who do that, such as their heads become like the humps of the Bactrian camel inclined to one side.

(البخت ) is a type of camel with two humps. As for the hair bands which do not increase the size of the head and is needed to rectify the hair, then there is no harm with it according to some Scholars.

It is mentioned in the explanation of az-Zaad: “There is no harm with a woman connecting (القرامل) to her hair”

I say: (القرامل) is what a woman tightens her hair with made of silk or other than it. Leaving that off is better in order to remove oneself from the difference of opinion because some of the Scholars prohibited that altogether.

As for the hair bands or clips in the form of animals or musical instruments, then they are not allowed because pictures are prohibited to use on clothing or other than that, unless the pictures are debased and used on carpets or blankets.

As for musical instruments, then it is obligatory to destroyed it. Hair bands and clips made in the form of musical instruments encourage musical instruments and call to their use and remembrance”
