Ruling on Reciting the Remembrances in Collective Voice after Prayers – Shaikh Yahya ibn Ali al-Hajoori

Question: What is the ruling on raising the voices with the remembrances after the prayer in a collective voice? What is the correct opinion in that? Benefit us, may Allah reward you.

Answer: The Question is [answered] from two angles:

The first angle: raising the voice…there is no harm in raising the voice in terms of a person hearing himself without causing disturbance and disruption. They heard the Messenger (ﷺ) say:

أستغفر الله.. أستغفر الله.. أستغفر الله، اللهم! أنت السلام، ومنكم السلام، تباركت يا ذا الجلال والإكرام

I seek Allah’s forgiveness, I seek Allah’s forgiveness, I seek Allah’s forgiveness.
O Allah, You are the Grantor of security, and security comes from You. You are Blessing, O You Who have majesty and nobility

[Hadith of Thawban reported in Muslim no. 591]

They heard him say:

الله أكبر.. الله أكبر.. الله أكبر

Allah is the Greatest..Allah is the Greatest..Allah is the Greatest

[As in the Hadith of Ibn Abbas reported in al-Bukhari no. 594 and Muslim no. 583]

Like this they heard him say the remembrances. From that is what has come from Ibn ul-Zubair [Reported in Muslim no. 594] and the Hadith of Mughirah [Reported by al-Bukhari no. 844 and Muslim no. 593]. The Ahaadith are many in this chapter. We will not mention them all now.

Our point is that there is no harm in raising the voice with remembrance such that he hears himself without disturbing the people and disrupting them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

لا يجهر بعضكم على بعض في القرآن، فكلكم يناجي ربه

Do not raise your voices one over the other with the Quran, for each of you is confidentially speaking with his Lord

[The Hadith of Ibn Umar is like this. The Hadith of Abu Saeed is with the wording:

فَلاَ يُؤْذِيَنَّ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا

One should not trouble the other

[Reported by Abu Dawood no. 1332, Nasai no. 8092, Ahmad (3/94). It is in Saheeh Musnad no. 419]

The Quran is remembrance. It is not necessary to disturb the reciter or the one remembering Allah by another one who is remembering Allah due to this hadith.

The second angle: eagerness to recite the remembrance collectively is a newly-invented matter and an innovation. Ibn Masud radiallahu anhu renounced the companions of Bani Hudhaifa. It is established, as in Sunan ad-Daarimi and other than it from the references, when he found people saying these remembrances. One of them would say: Exalt Allah one hundred times….Praise Allah one hundred times. So he said:

Oh people! Have you surpassed the Companions of the Messenger (ﷺ) in Knowledge! Or have you come with an oppressive innovation?! By Allah, these are the vessels of the Prophet (ﷺ) unbroken and his clothing is still wet and you have innovated into the religion of Allah what you have innovated

The narrator of the narration of Ibn Masud said: “I saw those people thrusting their spears with the people of Nahrawaan”
