Ruling on Ending the Khutbah with: ( وأقم الصلاة) – Shaikh Ibn ul-Uthaymeen

Question: The khateeb on Jummah in our masjid says at the end of his khutbah: (وأقم الصلاة) make the iqamah for the salah. Was this reported from the salaf?

Answer: “I do not know that this was reported from the salaf, I mean, the statement of the khateeb when he ends his khutbah: (أقم الصلاة) make the iqamah for salah or saying:

إن الصلاة تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر

Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahsha’ (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.) and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed, etc.)

[29:45]

So it is not necessary for the Imam to say this. However, when he finishes the khutbah he descends [from the minbar] then the iqamah is called just as the Prophet (ﷺ) did so and likewise his Rightly-guided Caliphs. As for this addition which has not been reported from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and not from his Rightly-guided Caliphs and no one of the scholars said it, then it is prohibited”.
