The Ruling on Using food to Beautify the Skin (Face Mask) – Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen

Question: Is it allowed to use food like flour, eggs, honey, milk, and the likes as a cure for the face from freckles and the likes? And if there is no sickness, but only for beautiifcation of the skin, is this allowed?

Answer: “What is well-known is that these things are food which Allah, the Exalted created as nourishment for the body. However, if a person needs to use it for something else like for a cure and it is not impure then there is no harm in this due to the verse of the Exalted:

هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي الأَرْضِ جَمِيعاً

He it is Who created for you all that is on earth. Then He Istawa (rose over) towards the heaven and made them seven heavens and He is the All-Knower of everything [2:29]

His statement for you includes the general benefit if there is nothing that indicates prohibition. As for what is used for beautification and there is other products that beautify the skin other than this, then using [those products] is more deserving. And know that there is no harm in beautification, rather Allah the Exalted is beautiful and loves beauty. However, extravagance in it such that it is becomes the greatest concern of a person and he is not concerned except with it and is heedless of the benefit of his religion and worldly life due to it is, then this is not necessary. This is because it enters into extravagance and Allah does not love it”.
