The Ruling on Taking From What Exceeds the Fistful of the Beard – Shaikh Muqbil ibn Haadi al-Wa’diee

Question: Do you take the opinion, on the topic of the beard, that it is obligatory to take what exceeds the fistful?

Answer: “No, no it is not allowed. It is not established from the Prophet (ﷺ). Rather he (ﷺ) said:

حفوا الشوارب ، واعفوا اللحى

Trim closely the mustache, and let the beard grow [Muslim no. 259]

And he (ﷺ) said:

وفروا اللحى

Keep the beards [Bukhari no. 5892]

And he (ﷺ) said:

ارخوا اللحى

and grow beard [Muslim no. 260]

And the beard of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to fill his chest. So it is not allowed to take from the beard. As for Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) taking from their beards what exceeds the fistful, then their action is not evidence. The benefit is from what Abdullah ibn Umar narrated not what he saw. The Messenger of Allah’s (ﷺ) beard used to fill his chest.

In Allah aid is sought”.
