Question: The questioner said: is it allowed to use a water bottle as a sutrah for a praying person?
Answer: “If it reaches two thirds of a cubit, then it counts due to the Hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in Saheeh Muslim when the Prophet (ﷺ) was asked about the sutrah of the praying person. He (ﷺ) said:
مِثْلُ مُؤْخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ
Equal to the back of the saddle
The extent of back of a saddle according to the People of Knowledge is similar to two-thirds of cubit and what is similar to that. What is apparent is that the issue is one of approximation. If it close to that, then there is no harm. As for it is less than that by a lot, then it does not count”.
