Question: May Allah be good to you, the questioner from Morocco says: one of the good doers gives me a study grant. Its value is 6000 dirhams every year. Is there Zakat due on it knowing that I am a student, and I have reached twenty-five years of age, and I do not have anyone who assists me?
Answer: “If you save this money, and a year is completed on it, and it reaches the Nisab (the minimum amount required to pay Zakat) then Zakat is obligatory upon it even if you are young and in need. If a poor person saves an amount of money which reaches the Nisab and a year is completed on it, then Zakat is obligatory upon him even if he is poor. This is because Zakat follows the wealth. Yes”.
