On the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Iblis said: ‘O my Lord, there is none from your creation except You granted it provision and livelihood. So what is my provision?’
He (Allah) said: ‘That which My name is not mentioned on it’”
[Reported by Abu Nu’aim in al-Hilyah (8/126) and others. Graded Saheeh by Imam al-Albani in as-Saheeha (no. 708)]
And the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
Verily Shaytan considers food lawful on which Allah’s name is not mentioned [Muslim no. 2017]
Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:
“The correct opinion which the majority of the Scholars from the Salaf and the Khalaf from the Hadith Scholars, jurists, and the people of Kalam held is that this Hadith and its likes from the reported Ahaadith in regards to Shaytan eating, are carried upon their apparent meaning. Shaytan eats in reality since the intellect does not prevent it and the Legislation does not detest it. Rather it affirms it so it is obligatory to accept it and believe in it. And Allah Knows Best” [Sharh Muslim (13/190)]
