The Ruling on Placing a Sign on a Grave – Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan

Question: Is it allowed to place a piece of iron and attach it upon a grave of a deceased? Written upon it are verses of the Qur’an along with the name of the deceased and his date of death?

Answer: “It is not allowed to write on the graves, not a name nor a translation nor the date of death. It is not allowed. All of this is impermissible because this leads to extremism for this deceased person and seeking blessings from it by the ignorant people, general folk, and the charlatans. As for placing a sign, which no one knows except him and it is a rock. He places it on the grave so as to visit it and supplicate for its companion, then there is no harm in that. As for [placing] signs so that the [deceased] is known and which are written upon, [then] this is more severe”.
