The Ruling on Wearing the Abayah from the Shoulders – Shaikh Salih al-Fawzaan

Question: What is the ruling on wearing a spacious abayah from the shoulders that covers all the parts of the body of a woman. Is this allowed to wear?

Answer: “Since it is desired for the woman to be covered by using an abayah or a covering garment, then the enemies dominated over this abayah in order to corrupt it. So they play with it and invent shapes that have become beautiful and it is not from the types of appropriate covering. The intent of the abayah is to cover the entire body from the head until the foot and heel. This is the intent. And it should not be tight. It should be over the clothing from the angle of protecting the woman. This is the intent of the abayah. It should also not have adornment or embroidery. It should verily be plain without adornment and it should not be worn from the shoulder, but rather worn from the head. This is the abayah that is desired
