The ruling on Physical Sports for Women – Shaikh Yahya Ibn Ali al-Hajoori

Question Is it allowed for women to learn to train her body through physical sports taken from the West, in order to preserve her beauty? This is because those that allow it use as evidence what the Prophet (ﷺ) did when he raced Aisha radiallah anha on some of his travels. May Allah reward you

Answer: “There is no preventative for a woman who is not pregnant. This is because the one who is pregnant may miscarry her child and become sinful because of it. As for the woman who is not pregnant, then there is no harm for her to exercise with what does not remove her modesty and what does not resemble the disbelieving women. A woman does not jog in the first three circuits of the tawaf upon arrival. This is because she is awrah. This is also because the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

إذا خرجت المرأة استشرفها الشيطان

The woman is Awrah, so when she goes out, the Shaitan seeks to tempt her

[Reported by Tirmidhi no. 273 and graded Saheeh by al-Albani in al-Irwaa (1/303)]

Also if she is in front of men and even if she is not training. If she is in front of men, she does not exercise and does not show her limbs because she is awrah. So due to that she wears her clothing as ihram [during hajj and umrah] except what is specified by evidence [i.e. is allowed to be removed]”.
