The Ruling on Two Jummah’s in One Masjid – Shaikh Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbad

Question: We have an Imam here in France who prays two Jummahs. A Jummah at the earlier time and a Jummah at the end time. With the argument that the Masaajid are few and the Masjid is small and it cannot hold the congregants. So they are divided into two.

Answer: “This is incorrect. If they cannot pray they can go to a Masjid that is bigger. As for them praying two Jummahs. Then the Jummah is for the first and the rest pray dhuhr. A Masjid prays one time. The others pray dhuhr, not Jummah.

Questioner: They use as evidence the issue of work. Even if they have multiple Imams? One Imam prays in one time with a group and the second Imam prays with another.

Shaikh: I do not know an origin for that. That a Masjid has a Jummah twice. I do not know of a Masjid praying Jummah twice. Jummah is prayed once. It is the first. [The rest] pray dhuhr. If it is like that, they can pray in another Masjid. Or make space or pray in another masjid. They do not have to pray in that Masjid such that these come early and these come after. It is possible they can pray in the streets if it has places connected to it. If the masjid is not big enough, they pray in what surrounds it. Even if it is separate from the masjid”.
