Question: Is it allowed to speak about worldly affairs between the adhan and the Iqamah in the masjid?
Shaikh: The answer has detail. It is allowed and not allowed. If the speech is temporary, for example a person enters the masjid and sees his friend which he didn’t see for a while. So he says: Assalamu Alaykum. How are you oh my brother? How is your family etc. This is speech of the worldly life. Of course this is allowed. However, coming to the masjid and making a circle and trying to find out the prices of the currencies and the prices of the guava etc. This is seeking the worldly life as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
إن المساجد لم تبنى لهذا
For the mosques were not built for this
[Saheeh Muslim no. 568]
So if the speech is customary then there is no prohibition. As for speech in which he wants the property of the world, then this is not allowed. Yes”.
