The Ruling on Wearing Used Clothing From the Non-Muslims – Shaikh Salih al-Fawzaan

Question: We find in our lands used clothing from foreign lands that are not Islamic. So what is the ruling on these clothes in prayer and does it affect its validity although we wash it like usual before wearing it? Or is it not allowed for a praying person to wear the garment of a man who does not pray?

Answer: “The origin of clothing is purity, even if is the clothing of the disbelievers or from the textiles of the disbelievers. So the origin is purity and it is allowed for us to wear and pray in it without washing, except if we know of its impurity. So then, we wash the impurity if we are certain and know of it. As for if we do not know something of it, then the origin is purity and it is not obligatory to wash it before using it. This was the action of the Muslims in the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) until this time of ours”.
