The Ruling on Women Wearing Deodorant – Shaikh Abu ‘Amr al-Hajoori

Question: The brother asks: what does a woman do if a foul scent comes out of her underarms and she is outside her house?

Answer: “It is as if he is asking: can she use perfume? No, it is not allowed. A woman does not use perfume except inside her house. However, there are things that remove the foul smells. There are some things that if used in the morning will remove the foul scent. If she leaves the house [after that], then (قَدَّرَ اللَّهُ ) it is what Allah decreed. Likewise  (شب الفؤاد ) [a substance similar to rock salt]. If someone showers and puts it on his body, especially the places on his body that do not have wounds, [first] wiping his body from the water with a towel, then placing it on his body and then removing it, he will remain for three to four days without any scent coming from him by the bounty of Allah. This is good. If a foul scent were to come from a woman, then this occurs from a human. It is not allowed for her to use perfume outside the house. As for inside her house, then there is no preventative”.

I also asked the Shaikh the following question on 12 Jumada al-Awwal 1437 corresponding to Feb 21, 2016:

السؤال: ما حكم استعمال مزيل العرق للنساء؟

الجواب : إن كان فيه عطر فلا تخرج به وتستخدمه أثناء بقائها في بيتها.

Question: What is the ruling on women wearing deodorant?

Answer: “If it has perfume, then she cannot leave her house wearing it. She can use it when she stays in her house”.
