The Ruling on Complaining – Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen

Question: May Allah bless you, this letter is from the sisters that study in the college of medicine in the university of Cairo. They say: we are classmates and when one of us finds difficulty in the course text or in any affair, we speak with her about her problems and we attempt to ease [the problems] for her. Is this considered complaining to other than Allah?

Answer: “This is not complaining to other than Allah. However, it is informing about something in order to have consultation and to exchange opinions. This is a natural affair which the people have been created with. Complaining to the creation is when a person intends by his speech or report to complain to the creation. As for simply reporting to exchange opinions, then there is no harm in this and t is not complaining”.

Translator’s Note:

Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah said:

… If he complains to another person due to what is in complaining of comfort, like the one who is afflicted and complains of his misfortune to the people not intending to learn what will benefit him nor seeking aid to commit a disobedience, then this deceases his patience. However, he is not sinful at all except if it is accompanied with what is prohibited like one who is afflicted and is discontent“.
