Question: Is Salatul Taraweeh obligatory upon the men first and then the women?
Answer: ” It is not obligatory upon the men and not the upon the women. Verily, it is a recommended Sunnah with a very large reward because the Messenger (ﷺ) said:
من صلى مع الإمام حتى ينصرف كتب له قيام ليلة
‘Indeed, whoever stands (praying) with the Imam until he finished, then it is recorded for him that he prayed the whole night.
[Reported by Tirmidhi and others. Graded Saheeh by Al-Albani in Saheeh Tirmidhi no. 806]
It is written for him standing the whole night because he prayed the obligatory Isha and increased standing for the Taraweeh prayer with him that night, from the first of Salatul Taraweeh to its end in accordance to the intended meaning. It is a Sunnah prayer which is eleven rakat, then it is written for him the standing of the whole night. It is a emphasized Sunnah and not obligatory, not upon the men nor the women. However, it is a Sunan which differs in its ruling from the other Sunan, rather it differs with the other obligations because the best prayer of the women is in her house. As for Salatul Taraweeh, then it has a special characteristic that the women be present [in the masjid ]. This resembles the two Eid prayers, although there is a difference of opinion on the ruling of the two eid prayers in regards to the women. So the two Eid prayers is obligatory on every mature, adult woman. As for Salatul Taraweeh, it is not obligatory. However, it is recommended for the women to be present in the Masaajid of the Muslims for the standing of Ramadan, unlike the obligatory prayers, let alone the voluntary prayers in which their houses are better for them.
