What to Say Upon Hearing a Rooster Crow or a Dog Bark? Shaikh Muqbil Ibn Hadi al-Waadi’ee

Question: What is the ruling on asking Allah for Paradise upon hearing the rooster and is it an obligation or a recommendation? Likewise, when seeking refugee upon hearing the the barking of the dogs. Is that repeated every time we hear it even if that is more than once at one time?

Answer: “As for when hearing the rooster or the crowing of the roster, then the Prophet(ﷺ) said:

فما سمعنا الصارخ

“So when we hear the crowing”

So the intent by that is the rooster. So if he hears it, then it is necessary to ask Allah for His bounty. This is considered recommended and not in the form of an obligation. And like this also, seeking refugee from Shaytan when hearing the barking of the dog. If the barking repeats continuously in one sitting, it is not necessary for him to say every time he hears the dog:

أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم

“I seek refuge with Allah from the Accursed Shaytan”

After some time, if then another dog barks or that same dog, then he seeks refugee with Allah from the Accursed Shaytan. As for if it is continuous, then it is sufficient to seek refugee once.

And in Allah is Aid sought”.
