The Ruling on Students Asking for Student Assistance/Grants – Shaikh Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad

Question: Is asking for assistance from charitable organizations that give student assistance/grants enter into the prohibition [of asking others]*?

Answer: “If they [the students] are sufficed, then they should not ask [from anywhere]. If they are in need, then they can ask”.

*Translator’s Note:

Some of the Ahaadith that prohibit asking others without a need include:

مَنْ سَأَلَ النَّاسَ وَلَهُ مَا يُغْنِيهِ جَاءَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمَسْأَلَتُهُ فِي وَجْهِهِ خُمُوشٌ أَوْ خُدُوشٌ أَوْ كُدُوحٌ 

Whoever begs from the people while he has what he needs, he will come on the Day of Judgment and his begging with be scratches or lacerations, or bite marks on his face.
