Ruling on Harming those Who Pray with the Ringing of Mobile Phones- Shaikh Ibn ul-Uthaymeen

Question: Oh Virtuous Shaikh: The use of pagers has increased amongst the people in recent times and its rings are what often disturb those praying their prayer or [the people ]during the khutbah. So can you draw attention to that? Barakallahu Feek.

Answer: “By Allah I will advise on this [issue]. Everything that harms the believers, then it is prohibited because the Prophet (ﷺ) came out to his Companions one day and they were praying and reciting aloud. So he said:

لا يؤذين بعضكم بعضاً في القراءة

One should not trouble the other and one should not raise the voice in recitation or in prayer over the voice of the other

[Reported by Abu Dawood and others. Graded Saheeh by Al-Albani in Saheeh Abu Dawood no. 1332]

This is in reciting Quran, so how about this ringing! I have heard, and I do not know if it is correct or not, that these pagers have a key that is capable [of making the pager] so that a sound cannot be heard from it. So if he enters the masjid, he turns it off or like that, leave it at home and when you return you will find the number”.
