Ruling on Defending a Muslim if Someone wants to Kill Him – Shaikh Ibn ul-Uthaymeen

Question: Oh Virtuous Shaikh, if a person transgresses upon one of the Muslims and I am not able to defend him except by using a weapon, is this allowed for me or not allowed?

Answer: If this person who wants to transgress against a Muslim wants to kill him, then it is obligatory upon you to defend him, even if that lead to killing him. It is obligatory to rescue a soul. As for if it is what is less than that, then it is not allowed to kill him.

Questioner: Without killing him Oh Shaikh?

Shaikh: How?

Questioner: Defend him, for example, or point to him

Shaikh: There is no harm in that, if he defends him with what does not kill him. That is: If he is not able to defend him except with that, then let him defend him. It is obligatory on the Muslims to support his brothers. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

انصر اخاك ظالما او مظلوم

Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or is oppressed

[Agreed upon]
